A lot of people asked me to post this in the "classics" section, so here it goes. Originally posted in the Public Forum, April 22nd, 2001.

Hello everyone. Well...first I wanna refresh your memory.

The Contestans Were: Invicta 8926, Citizen Eco-drive GMT, Poljot Alarm Aviator, TAG 2000 Exclusive Quartz, Breitling SOP, Rolex Sub, Panerai 44mm, and of course this forum's favorite Omega SMP.

The Tests Were: A washer on Warm Water Super Wash (extra dirty)with Tide With Bleach, a dryer on Warm setting for 30 minutes, and if any of them survive, a drop from the roof of a two-story house right on the cobble stone driveway.

The whole time watches were placed in Ashford red bags (1 watch per bag) to avoid unnecessary scratches.

1. The washer. None of the watches let the water in, except for POLJOT. Poljot lost its snap back and obviously got filled with water and soap. It also lost its second hand and was dead when we got it out of the washer. The other watches were supprisingly fine. Very impressive.

2. The dryer. This test was a killer to a few of them. Citizen Ecodrive GMT and Invicta 8926 cracked their glass and lost their second hands. Invicta also cracked its exhibition glass too and stopped working. Citizen was still working just without its second hand. Omega just stopped working, nothing rattles inside, all the hands are intact, just not ticking, hmm. What I really was supprised about is ROLEX SUB. It lost its second and minute hands and died. I tried to shake it, sounds like it has some loose parts rattling in it. Tag 2000 did not lose any hands but stopped working all together, very sad for a swiss quartz.
The only two that made it through a second round were PANERAI and Breitling SOP.
Very robust watches, like nothing happened.

3. Roof Drop. Breitling lost its second hand and stopped. Something is rattling inside, who knows. Panerai has a small scratch on its massive dial. Everything else is intact, all hands are there, still ticking. I don't know if it's the movement or the case, but Panerai is one serious brick house.

Conclusion: I am not a watchmaster. My buddy is gonna take the broken watches to his watch repairer to see what's up. We took Omega back to a store and showed the clerk that the watch is not working and got a refund. No, I don't feel guilty, it did not live up to my expectations and advertising hype.

CONCLUSION>>> If you're looking for the ultimate SUW (Sport Utility Watch), your best deal is Breitling SOP, cause it almost made it, and for the price you can't beat it. And, of course, the best SUW out there, period, is PANERAI Luminor Marina 44mm. It's a tank !!! My buddy is happy that at least one of his watches made it, and I am starting to save for my first really expensive watch... ahh, Panerai. For now I am glad I have KMU48 that shares that same bulletproof movement with Luminor Marina.

Thank you.

PS. Pictures are coming soon. Video Tape my buddy got to keep, so he can watch it later and cry over his used to be favorite Rolex Sub.
