This is an extra-ordinary story of a military submariner, Double reference 5513/5517.
About a year ago, I was contacted by a client who explained that he had a Rolex military Submariner passed on to him by his father, and he would like to sell it. But he went on to explain that the condition of the watch was not so good. The glass was smashed, the minute hand was missing, the dial was scratched and tired.

When I received the watch, I was thrilled. Although as described, I saw the inner beauty and the possibilities. Unfortunately, the dial was in such bad shape that the "T" was hardly visable. Now I had to confirm it. It was all original, and the inside of the case back was perfect with the correct font.

Information recieved from Rolex UK, not only confirmed it as a Military Sub, but also confirmed it as a Double reference 5513/5517, and issued to the Special Boat Squadron. I was pleased it was not the Nato issue.

I requested the service department for a NOS military bezel and a NOS "Navy Commander" dial, and a full service. "Yes" to full service, and a "No" to the dial and the bezel. But those who know me, know that I never give up.

I had to do a lot of arm twisting higher up the Rolex ladder, but it paid off, and Rolex UK decided to go with my requests as long as Geneva had the items in stock. They did.

Six months later, I received the Military Sub. It was a beauty. Then tragedy. The day I had received it from Rolex UK, a well know dealer was looking for a Mili Sub, I was a offered a price that I could not refuse but I should have. Anyway, to cut a long story short, today I re-purchased it although I ended up paying a heavy profit to him.

This particular watch has some important advantages, the dial and the bezel cannot be questioned as they are NOS from Rolex UK, the originality of the watch cannot be questioned as it is of good provenance and confirmed by Rolex Geneva. In the past year I have seen many fakes, and many cloned subs which have fooled many so called experts, I have seen them physically and on auction sites.

Hope you all enjoy the scan, and a chance to view an original NOS dial and bezel.

regards,
bjs
