An early 17th Century oval French verge watch in a contemporary silver and gilt metal case. Deep full plate oval fire gilt movement with four turned baluster pillars. Fusee and gut with gilt and blue steel barrel setup on the plate, three wheel train. Pierced and engraved cock fixed by tenon and pin with oval table. Plain steel balance without balance spring. Richly engraved gilt dial with silver chapter of Roman numerals, single steel hand. Steel latches at the side of the dial fix the movement in the contemporary case with the aid of the added silver lugs. Oval gilt metal case with decorative engraved silver scenes to both lids and the band.

Michel Cuper, Son of Paul, Married 1613, died 1634. Clockmaker to S.A.R. Gaston d'Orleans. A member of a famous clock making family in Blois, starting with Barthelmy in 1555.
