Master Compressor Memovox failings... Jan 16, 2004 - 08:43 AM

my wife bought me a master compressor memovox on bracelet for a belated wedding present. I must admit, I was very happy as I'd been eyeing getting an alarm watch for some time. However, with watch in hand, I noticed two things which make it less than "perfect":

1) It's been already mentioned that the alarm movement makes tinkling noises when not wound up, I didn't quite understand what was meant by that until I had the watch in hand. For future buyers, let's assume you have the alarm set at 6.30 (am/pm - note the alarm is on a 12 hour cycle). If the watch is not wound up, around 6.30'ish (I say around, since I've noticed the watch will manifest the following behaviour even almost to 7) if you rotate your wrist, you will hear the gently tinkling noise of the alarm. Not very worrisome, but kind of irritating in that you assume JLC would have been able to "lock" the alarm movement somewhat after the alarm reserve had run out. You can actually turn off the alarm by pulling out the 2 o'clock crown, but since all the literature JLC provide says this is not a good thing (i.e. to have the crown pulled out whilst the compressor movement is engaged) I decided this was not a workable solution.

2) The second issue, which I would consider a MAJOR failing from JLC, at least in terms of the pretension of this watch being targetted towards the Diver watch market (what with the compressor mechanism and the rotating bezel), is that the rotating bezel has no luminescence at all! The dial numerals and hour indications are all luminescent, but none of the markings on the rotating bezel are, least of all the 12 o'clock marking. Bad JLC, bad JLC!
