I have read the last messages about the first delivery of watches with special
"engraved backs" to Comex given in 1971/2.
For what I have seen untill now ( around 100 comex checked and a record of more
than 250 case numbers matched with the comex number ) and from the informations
gathered my opinion around the first batch of submariners with valve for comex
is :
1)the first batch was of around 300 watches ( case signed either 5513 or 5514)
2)all watches had case numbers in the range of 2.83X.XXX ;
3)all watches had the first type of helium-valve and safety catch (both non inox )
4)all watches had a very little number engraved in the outside of the back
under the words "rolex-comex" (these words were made by ELECTRO-EROSION AND NOT ENGRAVED )
5)all watches had a matt dial ( many of them without the "comex" logo that are
however far less interesting from the collector point of view ).
6)all watches were fitted with a rolex 1520 movement non-hack.
Before this delivery we have :
a) a few "single red" seadweller 1665 with maximum depth < 1650 ft= 500 m >
without any special engravings ;
b) a few omega "ploprof" (tested for example in 1970 in the operation Janus 2
made in Corsica )
c) some "double red" seadweller 1665 with maximun depth < 2000 ft= 610 m>
without any special engravings .
By the way also in the first half of the '70 some watches of this kind were given as a gift by the "sheriff" to divers or other comex-partners ,most of them without special engravings , but all with standard dials.
(see for example the commemorative watch for the operation Sagittaire IV ,made
in 1974 ,which has a standard dial ).
