Actually, IWC did make one, a 42mm limited edition of 125 for Wempe, the large retailer. But there's no plans to make any more.
I've talked to people at IWC about this and received varying opinions regarding why. Certainly, in the near future there's an exclsuive contract with Wempe for the limited edition model. But I've argued that it would take a year or two to come out with a new variant, which presumably would be after the exclusivity period. I also would suggest that the new model shouldn't be identical to the Wempe version: perhaps it should have a white dial or perhaps a different metal?

To me, not offering the watch is, to be candid, leaving money on the table. I think it will sell and sell well. However, there's many countervaling arguments:

--if it sells well, it would do so only at the expense of other models, including the GST perpetual, the Portuguese perpetual, the Da Vinci perpetual. That's just trading francs and not adding to the bottom-line (after all, this is a business);

--the market for perpetual sports watches is limited;

--flight watches are often for "purists" and there's little authenticity to a perpetual calendar flight watch;

--perpetuals appeal most to buyers when they're in gold, and from a marketing "hierarchy" perspective that's the best focus (and flight watches don't generally do well in gold).

These are some arguments I've heard, and they're not official positions of any one person nor the company's official position. I'm playing devli's advocate here.

BUT --what do you think? Should IWC make a perpetual chronograph flight watch? Why or why not?

To encourage discussion, for every five individuals who reply here I'll randomly draw one winner of a DVD or CD-ROM of the Big Pilot's Watch, up to a total of ten winners. To qualify, you must reply under this post by Thursday, October 2 at 11:59 p.m. Schaffhausen time.

Good luck,
Michael
